As I've been finishing up the manuscript for Elixir of Life, I have been thinking about the stories that will be told every time this is performed by one of you. How many people will your spectator tell the story of your magical experience to? About the health benefits of drinking green tea? Did you know that tea is the preferred hot drink by people over the age of 100? Coincidence?
I'm reading The Omnivores Dilemma right now, and the author talks about how with all the bad things in our food and the garbage we accept as a snack we've got what could be called a global eating disorder.
What would it take to educate people about right and wrong, about how important the food we put in our bodies is. I think it's all about sharing. Sharing how good we feel when we eat certain things, sharing some new study or finding that we learned about, sharing a new recipe for life.
I don't know why there is such a general apathy toward our nutrition in this country. I think a lot of it has to do with the governmental subsidies and lobbyists from these multi-billion dollar industries like dairy, cattle, fast food. Also the lack of accurate health education in publicly funded schools, and the free money these industries are getting from the government. The marketing aimed at kids helps us all to assume that this stuff is ok from an early age and make a habit of it. It's absurd that anyone would assume that eating a bowl of sugared rainbow colored rice with milk is an acceptable breakfast for a growing child, but they do. That so many things that belong on the dessert menu end up on the breakfast menu.
But as I mentioned, I'm excited. I'm excited about the change that we make one person at a time when we share what we know with each other.
